Ngorongoro Crater

Overview & Highlights

The Ngorongoro Crater is the world's largest inactive, intact, and unfilled volcanic caldera. Formed when a massive volcano exploded and collapsed two million years ago, the crater floor drops 610 meters (2,000 feet) and covers 260 square kilometers. It hosts a permanent population of over 25,000 large animals, including elephants, lions, leopards, hyenas, and some of the last remaining wild black rhinos in Tanzania. The soda lake (Lake Magadi) attracts thousands of flamingos.

What We Love

  • Exceptional year-round wildlife viewing densities
  • High probability of spotting endangered black rhinos
  • Stunning scenery of the volcanic caldera
  • Easy wildlife sightings on the flat caldera floor

Keep in Mind

  • Highly crowded with safari vehicles
  • Expensive Crater Service Fee ($295 per vehicle)
  • Rim accommodations can get very cold

Safety, Malaria & Guidelines

Operational Advisory

Always obey local safety parameters, environmental codes of conduct, and instructions from park rangers or guides.

Descent permits are restricted to 6-hour slots per vehicle to reduce crater congestion. Gates open at 06:00 AM. Temperatures on the crater rim (2,200m altitude) are cold, dropping to 10°C (50°F) or lower at night; warm layers are essential. The crater floor has designated lunch spots with restrooms. Watch out for bold black kites (birds of prey) at the hippo pool picnic site - they will snatch food directly from your hands.

🦟 Malaria & Health Advisory

Malaria is present in most wildlife reserves in Tanzania. It is strongly recommended to consult a travel clinic for antimalarial prescription. Use mosquito repellent containing DEET and wear light-colored, long-sleeved clothes in the evening.
