Overview & Highlights
Nungwi Beach is situated on the northernmost tip of Zanzibar. Known for its soft, powder-white sand, vibrant turquoise waters, and unique geography where the tide doesn't recede for miles (unlike the east coast), it is perfect for swimming throughout the day. Visitors can witness traditional dhow building, relax in beachfront hammocks, and experience some of the best sunset views on the island. The waters are warm, clear, and rich in marine life, making it a gateway for snorkeling and diving trips.
Safety, Malaria & Guidelines
Operational Advisory
Always obey local safety parameters, environmental codes of conduct, and instructions from park rangers or guides.
While Nungwi is generally very safe, travelers should take standard precautions. Only swim in designated areas and be aware of occasional strong currents. Dress conservatively when leaving the beach and walking through the village (shoulders and knees covered) to respect local Muslim customs. Beach vendors (locally known as 'Papasi') can be persistent; a polite but firm 'No thank you' is usually respected. Use licensed operators for water activities.
