Mafia Island

Overview & Highlights

Mafia Island is a tranquil, secluded tropical island located off the coast of mainland Tanzania, south of Zanzibar. Unlike its busy sibling Zanzibar, Mafia remains largely undeveloped and pristine. The island is surrounded by a protected Marine Park, offering some of the best scuba diving and snorkeling in East Africa, featuring coral gardens, reefs, walls, and rich marine biodiversity. The primary attraction is swimming with whale sharks, which reside in the channel between October and March.

Safety, Malaria & Guidelines

Operational Advisory

Always obey local safety parameters, environmental codes of conduct, and instructions from park rangers or guides.

Activities in the marine park are dependent on tides; check with your dive center daily. Marine park fees are paid at the gate or resort (approx. $23.60 USD per day). When swimming with whale sharks, follow strict ecological guidelines: do not touch or feed the animals, maintain a 3-meter distance, and do not use flash photography. The island has limited ATM access, so bring sufficient cash (USD or TZS).
