Nyerere National Park (Selous)
About Nyerere National Park (Selous)
Nyerere National Park, formerly the northern section of the legendary Selous Game Reserve, is one of the largest protected wildlife areas in the world. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the park is dominated by the mighty Rufiji River, which creates a complex network of channels, swamps, and lakes that draw diverse wildlife. This riverine geography makes Nyerere the premier destination in Tanzania for boat safaris, allowing visitors to glide within meters of basking crocodiles, large pods of snorting hippos, and elephants bathing along the banks. The dry woodlands and grassy plains are also home to thriving populations of wild dogs, lions, leopards, black rhinos, and large numbers of buffaloes and giraffes.
