Gombe Stream National Park
About Gombe Stream National Park
Gombe Stream National Park is a tiny but globally famous strip of dense rainforest clinging to the steep ridges bordering the crystal-clear waters of Lake Tanganyika. Established in 1968, Gombe is the site of Jane Goodall's pioneering chimpanzee research, which began in 1960 and remains the longest-running continuous study of wild animals in the world. The park is a primate sanctuary, home to habituated chimpanzee troops, red-tailed monkeys, olive baboons, and blue monkeys. Visitors can trek steep forested paths under the guidance of experienced trackers to sit quietly in the presence of chimpanzees, watching them groom, play, feed, and communicate. Gombe's unique location also allows hikers to swim in Lake Tanganyika or visit Kakombe Waterfall.
